AFL gets its Philly Soul back

After a one-year hiatus, the Arena Football League returned in 2010, with weekly games televised on NFL Network.

In 2011, another familiar fixture of the indoor operation will be resurrected. The Philadelphia Soul will return to the AFL.

The team will be owned by Craig Spencer, Ron Jaworski, Pete Ciarrochi, and Cosmo DeNicola.

“We are bringing back to our incredible fans the most exciting, fan-friendly and affordable brand of football in America,” Jaworski said. “My partners and I are committed to putting together a championship team for this great city to be proud of.”

Jon Bon Jovi, who was part of the prior ownership team, will not be involved in Soul 2.0.

“I will not be part of the ownership group due to my focus and attention being on the current Bon Jovi worldwide tour, but I have fond memories of my experience with the Soul and especially our 2008 ArenaBowl championship season,” Bon Jovi said in the release. “I continue to be a fan of the team and want nothing but continued success on and off the field for the Soul.”

We suspect that Bon Jovi toured the world at least once during his prior ownership involvement, but we likewise suspect that a statement along the lines of “thank God I still do crunches because I lost my shirt the last time around” wouldn’t have set the right mood for the return of the team.
