Ahmad Bradshaw to bench; Brandon Jacobs defends him

A. Bradshaw2

For the second time this year, there is a notable change atop of the Giants running back depth chart.

When Ahmad Bradshaw got the call over Brandon Jacobs in training camp, it signaled a shift in strategy for New York. Now Jacobs is back on top because Bradshaw keeps coughing the ball up. In both cases, the two Giants -- who are close -- supported one another.

To me, it’s just temporary,” Jacobs said. “I think people are making a little too much of it. We know what Ahmad means to this football team. His character, his heart, his hard work. And he knows that as well. If you ask me, it’s just temporary. I don’t know what the reason for the whole thing is or what they’re trying to prove, but it’s temporary.”

Giants coach Tom Coughlin said that no one should be surprised Bradshaw was demoted after his recent fumbling streak. Bradshaw is fifth in the NFL in rushing yards, but he leads running backs with six fumbles.

Bradshaw said he understood and will do what’s best for the team. We suspect what’s best for the Giants will include many more touches for Bradshaw the rest of the way than Jacobs, regardless of who starts the game. Jacobs agrees.

“That’s basically what I got to say,” Jacobs said. “If we want to win, hand it to him and [Bradshaw’s] going to get it.”
