Alex Boone sprains MCL, might be done as a 49er

In a lost season that has already seen them bench their franchise quarterback, the 49ers may now have seen the last of one of his best blockers.

According to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com, 49ers guard Alex Boone is likely out the rest of the season with a sprained MCL.

Boone doesn’t need surgery, but with just three games left and the 49ers slogging along at 4-9, there’s no rush to get him back.

And he may never come back. The 28-year-old Boone is schedule to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason, and will be sought after. He broke into the starting lineup in 2012, and has started at both guard spots.

He’s also held out of voluntary offseason work the last two offseasons for contract reasons, so it’s reasonable to think he’s ready to maximize his value someplace else as a free agent.
