Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson was not satisfied with his own performance in Thursday night’s preseason opener.
Richardson started the game and completed 11 of 14 passes for 145 yards, with no touchdowns, one interception and one lost fumble, and he also ran six times for 53 yards and a touchdown. But afterward he said the turnovers overshadow the good he did.
“I don’t even think I played that well, honestly,” Richardson said. “Fumble, interception early. I’ve got to limit the turnovers. You can’t win games with multiple turnovers. So I don’t think I played that well today. It was decent, we moved the ball a little bit, but I think we can definitely improve.”
Colts head coach Shane Steichen was more charitable about Richardson’s performance.
“He did some good things. Obviously we were moving the ball efficiently. The turnovers hurt us, the fumble down there,” Steichen said. “It’s hard to maintain drives when you’re turning the ball over, but overall I think he did a lot of good things.”
When the Colts took Richardson with the fourth overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft. they thought he’d be doing a lot more than just competing for the No. 2 job as he heads into Year Four. But for where he is at this point, Steichen is pleased. Even if Richardson himself is not.
