The Bears might be down a pair of starting offensive linemen for the next few weeks and it looks like they’ll bring back a former member of the club to help spackle over the holes.
Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reports that the Bears will re-sign offensive lineman Eben Britton, who they released in August on the way to 53 players. Britton played in 13 games last season and saw most of his time when the offense would go with an extra offensive lineman to provide added bulk up front.
Britton has played both guard and tackle with the Bears and Jaguars and Biggs adds that he saw limited time at center during training camp in 2013. Center Roberto Garza and left guard Matt Slauson both have high ankle sprains, so Britton’s versatility should come in handy.
The Bears are expected to go with Brian de la Puente at center and Michael Ola at guard after both players turned in a good showing after injury struck in the season-opening loss to the Bills.
UPDATE 5:00 p.m. ET: The Bears dropped kick returner Micheal Spurlock to make room for Britton.
