Houston Texans owner Bob McNair tells John McClain of the Houston Chronicle that he is now healthy after a 10-month battle with two different forms of cancer.
McNair, 77, kept the matter as secret as possible and received treatment under an assumed name. After surgeries to treat chronic lymphocytic leukemia, repeated radiation sessions and skin grafts for second-degree burns caused by the radiation, McNair is now back to full health.
“I’ve never been through anything like that, but two days ago, I was given a clean bill of health, so it was worth the pain and suffering,” McNair said. “I didn’t think I was going to die. I knew some did. I knew there were some rumors. That’s one of the reasons I’m talking about it.
“I don’t want people to think it’s something it’s not. I’m not ill. I’m healthy. I’m not going anywhere. We’ve got Super Bowls to win.”
McNair has battled skin cancer in the past and was diagnosed with leukemia six years ago. He began to treat the cancer in October and underwent multiple surgeries and radiation treatments to fight off the cancer. A check-up in May was clean and a follow-up on Monday was clean as well.
“We’ve been successful. I was convinced I’d be cured. I told my family that. It was just something I had to go through,” McNair said.
