Broncos make Trevor Siemian a captain for the rest of the season

Second-year quarterback Trevor Siemian started the season with a tenuous hold on the starting job. With a 6-1 record as a starter and a one-game experiment with rookie Paxton Lynch accounting for the team’s other loss, it’s now clear that Siemian will be the guy for the rest of the year.

As a result, Siemian has now been named a captain for the rest of the year.

The 2015 seventh-round pick from Northwestern joins receiver Demaryius Thomas, who had been the lone offensive captain.

It really is [a tremendous honor],” Siemian said, via the team’s official website. “It means a lot to me to, first of all, be a part of this locker room and then know some guys think of me in that light. So [it’s] a huge honor for me, [and I’m] really excited to be a part of this thing.”

The Broncos added two other captains: Safety T.J. Ward joins linebacker DeMarcus Ware as defensive captains, and Dekoda Watson joins Kayvon Webster as special-teams captains.

If Siemian continues to play as well as he has, it will be interesting to see whether Siemian continues to be the starting quarterback in 2017 and beyond, given the presence of a first-rounder for whom the Broncos traded up.

Simian’s first start as a captain comes on Sunday night, when the 6-2 Broncos take on the 6-2 Raiders in one of the best games of the year to date.
