Tight end Jeff Heuerman’s rookie season will be spent rehabbing a torn ACL, but the injury didn’t get in the way of the Broncos signing him to a four-year deal.
The Broncos announced Thursday that they Heuerman, a third-round pick, has signed a contract with the team. That puts all nine 2015 draft picks under contract.
Heuerman injured his knee doing special teams drills at the team’s rookie minicamp in May, which will cost the Broncos one of the players they hoped to deploy at tight end in the wake of Julius Thomas’s departure as a free agent. When healthy at Ohio State, Heuerman showed the ability to move around the field as both a blocker and receiver.
Heuerman told Troy Renck of the Denver Post that he feels his recovery from the injury and subsequent surgery is “going well,” but he’s early in the process. If all goes well, he should be competing for playing time this time next year.
