The Browns claimed a receiver on waivers Friday and waived another receiver off the roster, adding ex-Viking Rodney Smith and releasing LaRon Byrd, the club said.
Smith has appeared in five regular season games, all with Minnesota (2013-14). A Florida State product, Smith (6-5, 220) played in the Vikings’ season-opening win at St. Louis, logging two snaps on special teams and one on offense. The Vikings waived the 24-year-old Smith on Thursday to add quarterback Chandler Harnish to back up Christian Ponder with Teddy Bridgewater out with an ankle injury.
Byrd, 25, appeared in the Browns’ season opener (seven special teams snaps).
The Browns are at the 53-player limit. They have six wide receivers, with Andrew Hawkins and Miles Austin the starters.
