Browns close to hiring Horton as defensive coordinator

A week after he was introduced as head coach, Hue Jackson is making progress with his first Browns staff.

The Browns are close to finalizing a deal with Ray Horton to be the team’s defensive coordinator, PFT has confirmed. Horton interviewed for the job earlier this week.

Horton was the Browns defensive coordinator in 2013. That staff was fired after one season, and Horton spent the last two seasons as defensive coordinator with the Titans. Horton also spent the 2011 and 2012 seasons as the defensive coordinator for the Cardinals, where he worked for head coach Ken Whisenhunt. Whisenhunt was also the head coach in Tennessee when Horton came to the Titans.

Earlier Wednesday, ESPN’s Josina Anderson reported that Kirby Wilson will leave the Vikings to join the Browns as run game coordinator. Cleveland.com reported that veteran coach Al Saunders will also be on the offensive staff.
