Aaron Hernandez might be the most famous NFL player in police custody at the moment, but he’s not the only one.
The Record reports that Browns linebacker Ausar Walcott was arrested and charged with attempted murder in Passaic, New Jersey following an incident early Sunday morning. Walcott allegedly punched Derrick Jones in the head outside The Palace Gentleman’s Club in Passaic, leading Jones’ friends to take him to a hospital where a police spokesman said he remained in critical condition on Tuesday.
Walcott, who was signed as an undrafted free agent last month, has been charged with second-degree aggravated assault and third-degree endangering an injured victim in addition to the first-degree attempted murder charge. He turned himself into police on Tuesday and bail was set at $500,000.
While at the University of Virginia, Walcott was involved in a fight that caused the school to suspend him from the team. He was reinstated when all charges were dropped and told the Washington Post in 2011 that he’d learned a lesson about walking away from potentially bad situations before they had a chance to escalate. There aren’t many details from Sunday morning, but it appears that things didn’t work out that way this time.
The Browns released a statement saying they were aware of the situation and would not comment on an ongoing legal matter. The newspaper was not able to reach members of Walcott’s family on Tuesday.
