The Broncos are still sorting out their quarterback depth chart, but one thing about their 2016 offensive approach seems clear after their offseason work.
Denver finished 17th in the league in both rushing yards and rushing attempts during the 2015 season and it seems like a good bet that they are going to try to raise those numbers this time around. They drafted a fullback after lining up in two-back sets 25 times last year and Jeff Legwold of ESPN.com reports that rookie Andy Janovich and veteran Juwan Thompson were regular presences in the backfield during OTAs.
That left running back C.J. Anderson with little doubt about what coach Gary Kubiak has in mind for the offense this season.
“I don’t think there’s a question what coach wants to do,” Anderson said. “All you have to do is look out there and see a fullback running around ... I mean, we even drafted one. [Kubiak] wants to run the ball.”
A stout defense and successful running game would be two good ways to keep the Broncos from putting too much on the shoulders of whichever quarterback gets the starting job, although they’ll need to show they can make plays in the air to keep defenses from selling out to stop the run once September arrives.
