The NFL preseason is dangerous. Even before the games start.

Eagles kicker Caleb Sturgis is out for Thursday night’s Eagles-Steelers game after suffering a concussion when a punt hit him in the head during pregame warmups. Sturgis wasn’t wearing his helmet when he was hit by the ball.

Sturgis and Cody Parkey are competing for the Eagles’ kicking job, so the absence of Sturgis makes it an even bigger night than it already was for Parkey and his bid to win a job.

Sturgis is a fourth-year pro and is entering his second season with the Eagles. He went 18-of-22 on field goal tries in 13 games for the Eagles last season.
