The market for veteran linebackers is nearly as soft as the market for veteran running backs. Linebacker Clark Haggans has experienced that reality over the past 2.5 months -- and he finally decided enough was enough.
According to the Arizona Republic, Haggans has re-signed with the team. It’s a one-year deal.
Haggans started all 16 games last season, the first time he’s accomplished that feat in 12 NFL seasons. He joined the Cardinals in 2008, after spending his first eight years with the Steelers.
The development comes a day after the Cardinals didn’t extend to Haggans a tender offer that would have given the Cardinals exclusive rights to Haggans if he remained unsigned as of July 22. Per a league source, the Cardinals opted not to make the so-called June 1 Tender to Haggans, linebacker Joey Porter, running back Chester Taylor, guard Floyd Womack, defensive end Vonnie Holliday, tackle Brandon Keith, and defensive back Hamza Abdullah.
The players already were unrestricted free agents. Absent the June 1 Tender, they’ll remain unrestricted through July 22 and beyond. Except for Haggans, now that he has not a tender but a signed contract.
