We’ll file this one under “N” for “no f--king way.” But it’s nevertheless worth a mention. Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat writes that he’s heard a rumor that the Cardinals have called the 49ers in search of Mike Martz’s cell phone number. Presumably, the Cardinals would want to contact Martz in order to explore his interest in becoming the team’s next offensive coordinator. “I have not been able to confirm this happened, so take it for what it’s worth,” Maiocco writes. Though intriguing, we see three problems with this possibility. First, the Cardinals wouldn’t need to call the Niners to figure out how to contact Martz. They’d only need to call his agent, Bob LaMonte. Second, unless the Cardinals are hoping not to bring back quarterback Kurt Warner, bringing Martz on board makes no sense. Things got ugly between the two of them in St. Louis, with Warner at one point claiming that Martz benched the two-time league MVP due to his religious beliefs. Third, Martz’s reputation in league circles really hasn’t changed much over the past few years. He’s regarded as a guy who’s obsessed with positioning himself to become a head coach again and who constantly externalizes blame. Also, he has been fired from his last three jobs. So we’d be shocked if Martz even gets an interview for the job.
