CBS has said nothing more about the status of No. 1 NFL analyst Tony Romo since CBS placed him on leave, with a one-sentence press release.
On Monday, CBS confirmed that Romo’s leave won’t be ending before Week 4.
CBS has announced the broadcast teams for Week 2 and Week 3. The top team continues to consist of Jim Nantz and J.J. Watt. That includes the Ravens-Cowboys game to be played in Brazil.
Most believe Romo won’t return this year. Many believe he’ll never be back, with only a buyout to be negotiated.
After Romo issued a statement on September 1 disclosing that he would be pleading no-contest to charges related to an OWI arrest in Milwaukee, CBS had nothing to say. Which said plenty.
There may never be a statement in which CBS declares that its relationship with Romo is over. The message may simply come one development at a time, starting with Watt replacing him for Week 1 — and continuing with Watt keeping the spot for Week 2 and Week 3.
