The Chargers are having as hard a time keeping centers on the field as running backs.

The team announced today that veteran blocker Doug Legursky was going on season-ending injured reserve with a knee injury.

Asked who would start in the middle now for the 4-1 Chargers, head coach Mike McCoy replied: “We’ll make a decision in the next couple of days.”

They had already placed starter Nick Hardwick on IR and backup Rich Ohrnberger was inactive the last two weeks with a back injury, meaning they’ll use their fourth center in six games next week.

That mimics the injuries to running backs Ryan Mathews, Danny Woodhead (IR) and Donald Brown which forced undrafted rookie Branden Oliver onto the field yesterday.

Through it all, the Chargers have played consistent, physical football.

But at some point, the physical toll of losing so many key players might start to show.
