In a gesture that’s sensible yet still pretty stinking cool, the Chiefs have announced that safety Eric Berry will be a team captain for their Saturday night preseason opener in Arizona.
It’s the first time Berry, a three-time Pro Bowler, will play since his Hodgkin’s lymphoma diagnosis last December.
A fan favorite even before his fight and return to the field this summer, Berry finished treatments in May and was cleared for football activities just before the Chiefs opened training camp. He mostly stayed out of the public eye through the winter and spring, but his return is one of the best NFL stories of the summer.
The Cardinals acknowledged Berry’s return on the in-stadium big board before the game.
