The Kansas City Chiefs announced today that they’ve placed six players on waivers, including quarterback Matt Gutierrez and running back Kolby Smith.
Gutierrez signed with the New England Patriots as an undrafted free agent in 2007 and sufficiently impressed Scott Pioli (then the Patriots’ VP of Player Personnel and now the Chiefs’ General Manager) that the Chiefs claimed Gutierrez in 2009 after the Patriots waived him. Gutierrez has thrown only two regular-season passes in his NFL career.
Smith was a 2007 fifth-round pick who burst onto the scene in his first NFL start, carrying 31 times for 150 yards against the Raiders in Week Twelve of his rookie year. But after showing so much promise as a rookie, Smith had just 35 carries for 100 yards in all of 2008, and only 15 carries for 33 yards in 2009.
The Chiefs also announced they waived tight end Leroy Banks, defensive back Andre Jones, offensive lineman Nick Landry and offensive lineman Jermail Porter.
