With the first week of the preseason upon us, free agent running back Chris Johnson may finally be close to finding an NFL job.
Johnson will be in Arizona on Sunday for a workout and a physical with the Cardinals, Jay Glazer of FOX Sports reports. The physical will be of particular importance for Johnson, as any team signing him will want to be sure there are no lingering effects from the offseason incident in which he was shot in the shoulder.
The 29-year-old Johnson may be the best free agent running back available, although he’s nowhere near the player he once was. In 2009 Johnson became the only player in NFL history to gain more than 2,500 yards from scrimmage in a season, but last year with the Jets he managed just 663 yards on 155 carries, plus another 151 yards on 24 catches.
In Arizona, Johnson would be expected to share carries with starting running back Andre Ellington.
