Cincinnati coach Scott Satterfield has been hearing from NFL teams about Brendan Sorsby

With quarterback Brendan Sorsby heading to the NFL (if the NFL lets him into the supplemental draft), the question becomes whether he’ll be drafted and, if so, the round in which he’ll be selected.

His coach for his final two college seasons — Cincinnati’s Scott Satterfield — discussed Sorsby’s prospects in this regard on Tuesday, in connection with the announcement of an inaugural “Victory Bell” rivalry game against Miami (Ohio).

“There certainly have been scouts,” Satterfield said, via Keegan Knickoson of 247Sports.com, "[General Managers] have reached out and are just asking questions on a more personal level, probably more than the football level, with their interest, knowing that potentially something like this could happen. I certainly think now that the news is out, over the next few weeks, there’s going to be a lot more inquiries about him, and trying to find more and more about him, and be able to take a chance to, if any of them take him.”

The teams will have plenty of work to do during what usually is the slow time. Beyond the Pro Day workout, set for July 10, interested teams will have much work to do, as it relates to both his physical abilities and the status of his addiction and associated anxiety.

Above all else, interested teams will need to make a reliable projection that Sorsby will not be eventually at the center of a gambling scandal, once he gets to the NFL.

Satterfield is confident that Sorsby will have a new home promptly.

“I certainly expect there to be takers,” Satterfield said. “I think, even before all this stuff hit, we had 32 teams come to our campus, and a lot of them were inquiring about him at that point. And he could’ve come out and potentially been a first-round draft pick. There will certainly be teams very interested in him. He’s very talented, has great size, and can run and throw. I think if you just look at the history of the NFL, there are guys who have made mistakes, and they still have taken chances on them. And so I feel like he’ll certainly have learned from this and grown, and somebody will give him an opportunity.”

Helping Sorsby’s cause is the importance of the quarterback position. It’s not easy to find a long-term, year-to-year franchise quarterback. The potential reward will make multiple teams willing to assume the associated risk.

From Sorsby’s perspective, the best outcome will be to land with the team that has the best plan for helping him prepare to make the fairly sudden and dramatic adjustment to pro football. He’ll be thrust immediately into NFL training camp. He’ll need the best possible support system.
