As running back Trent Richardson, who went from anticipated special-teams duty to being inactive for Sunday’s playoff win at Denver, could once again be patrolling the sidelines in street clothes at New England. Which suggests that, come next year, Richardson will not be a member of the team.
But here’s the problem for the Colts. Richardson has one year left on the contract he received as the third overall pick in the 2012 draft. It’s the same contract for which the Colts traded with the Browns in 2013.
The contract is fully guaranteed. The Colts owe him $3.18 million for 2015. With no offset.
The absence of offset language means that the Colts owe him the money whether he’s on the team or not. Even if someone else signs him, they still owe him the full $3.18 million.
