The Colts signed cornerback Shaun Prater Tuesday, the team’s latest move intended to boost a secondary that’s been limited by injuries.
Eric Patterson was waived to make room on the roster for Prater. Patterson is familiar with this process; he played in the first two games for the Colts but was cut last week, signed back to the practice squad, then promoted again last Friday.
The Colts have needed Patterson because cornerbacks Greg Toler (neck) and Darius Butler (hip) have been injured. The team hopes to have Butler back at practice this week and maybe back in the lineup Sunday vs. Jacksonville. Cornerback Vontae Davis left the team’s Week 2 game with a concussion but was cleared to return last week, and cornerback D’Joun Smith is on injured-reserve/designated for return.
Prater is a veteran of 19 career games and three starts. A fifth-round pick of the Bengals in 2012, he’s also spent time with the Vikings and Eagles.
