The Cowboys are adding a quarterback to their active roster, but they’re making him change positions first.
According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Cowboys are promoting Jameill Showers from the practice squad, after converting him to safety.
He’ll now wear jersey number 28, and be a reserve on defense and play special teams.
Showers, who was once a backup to Ryan Tannehill and Johnny Manziel at Texas A&M, eventually transferred to Texas-El Paso. He spent most of last year on the Cowboys practice squad, but was promoted late in the season.
He got some chances this year in the preseason, but was leapfrogged by rookie Dak Prescott.
