The Cowboys haven’t finalized anything with looking-for-a-raise cornerback Orlando Scandrick, but they’re at least talking, which is a step in the right direction.
Scandrick has stayed away from offseason workouts, but returned to Dallas this week to talk numbers, and it seems the discussions were positive.
“We would like to get something satisfactorily worked out with him,” owner Jerry Jones said, via Todd Archer of ESPNDallas.com. “Hopefully we can get something worked out that can be in the best interest of the Cowboys and also accommodate what he needs to do. We didn’t get anything done, but we certainly are talking about it.”
Scandrick is bypassing a $500,000 workout bonus, but stands to make up for that with a new deal. He’s their third-highest-paid corner at the moment, behind Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne. He’s set to make $1.5 million this year, and $3 million per year from 2016-18.
“I don’t want to speculate our business,” executive vice president Stephen Jones said. “I don’t like to do anything like that. We did talk about that. He’s under contract and he should be in here working with his teammates. He’s a competitor and I think the world of Orlando. I also understand any player in terms of what their thoughts are, respect them, but at the same time he’s under contract to the Dallas Cowboys and in my opinion he should be out there working with us.”
With the uncertain injury status of Claiborne, Scandrick is still very much a need player, and their best corner. The question is whether they have to adjust another deal first to get him taken care of.
