Daunte Culpepper will start at quarterback for the Lions on Sunday against the Cardinals, as rookie Matthew Stafford misses another game with a shoulder injury.
Culpepper hasn’t accomplished much of anything with the Lions this season, completing 53 of 99 passes for 568 yards, with one touchdown and four interceptions. But he still thinks he has something left.
“Really, when it comes down to it, I know I have confidence in myself to be able to put a lot of points on the board when it’s there,” Culpepper said. “And when it doesn’t happen, you’ve got to get back to the drawing board and then make it happen when you get back out there.”
But while Culpepper has confidence in himself, it’s clear that the Lions don’t have much confidence in Drew Stanton, the 2007 second-round pick who is the Lions’ third-string quarterback. Lions coach Jim Schwartz didn’t sound enthused about the way Stanton looked in practice.
“He’s gotten reps in practice, sure,” Schwartz said. “He’s gotten more just from the standpoint of he needs to be ready, but Daunte is the starter.”
