When the confetti was coming down on the field after the Patriots finished off a wild 28-24 Super Bowl victory over the Seahawks, cameras caught Patriots coach Bill Belichick grabbing cornerback Darrelle Revis and microphones picked up the coach telling Revis that “this is why you’re here.”
Belichick was referring to the Patriots’ decision to sign Revis as a free agent during the offseason after he parted ways with the Buccaneers, a decision that Revis said he made with the same goal in mind.
“Oh yeah. This was the talk from day one. This is the reason why I came to this organization and having the conversation with Mr. [Robert] Kraft and Bill in the offseason. To get to this game and win it,” Revis said after the game.”
With that accomplished, attention will now shift toward Revis’s 2015 plans. New England has an option to keep Revis for next season at a cost of $20 million or they could pass on that option in hopes of signing Revis to a more palatable contract this offseason. That would open up the door to other teams that might want Revis’s services, but any discussion of the many ins and outs of the situation will have to wait for a little while.
“The offseason will weigh itself out. I’m just so happy for us as a team. Accomplishing the ultimate goal and that’s winning the Super Bowl. Like I said, I have a great team on my side and we’ll figure my future out in the offseason,” Revis said.
With Revis on board, the Patriots gave up 313 points for their fewest points allowed since the 2010 season. Assuming that the financials can be sorted out, one would imagine that they’d like to have the same kind of presence in their secondary again next season.
