The Jets have liked what they’ve seen from linebacker David Bailey so far this summer.
Bailey was given credit for three sacks in the team’s second practice of training camp, which is exactly the kind of impact that the Jets hoped to get off the edge when they made him the second overall pick of this year’s draft. Head coach Aaron Glenn called Bailey “everything that I imagined” at a press conference this week and veteran defensive lineman Harrison Phillips said on Saturday that the rookie is “in the backfield all the time.”
All of this has happened before the pads have come on at Jets camp and Bailey was asked on Saturday if he feels pressure to make immediate waves as a pro.
“I wouldn’t necessarily say I feel pressure,” Bailey said at a press conference. “It’s in the back of your mind. You know you’re the No. 2 pick, you know there’s high expectations just from the fans and also from teammates and the staff and everything. But I try to like not let that get to me. I try to say really nothing has changed, honestly. Like in terms of if I want to be the best, I’ve got certain things that I need to do. Getting in the playbook, taking care of my body, studying film, studying other pass rushers that I want to emulate my game after and just taking care of the things I can control.”
Bailey called sacking a quarterback “the best feeling in the world” and a Jets defense was lacking much of anything to feel good about last year will be hoping Bailey experiences it often during his rookie season.
