Injured Jets wide receiver Eric Decker had hip surgery Tuesday, the team announced, and that was just part of the surprising news regarding Decker’s status.

Decker is on the injured-reserve list due to a shoulder injury. Per the team, the hip surgery was “deemed necessary” during an evaluation for the shoulder injury last week.

The team’s statement said the anticipated recovery time for the hip surgery is six months, and once Decker is off crutches he will then have shoulder surgery and have an eight-month timetable for recovery from the shoulder surgery. Those time frames aren’t successive; he’ll be off crutches in fewer than six months. Once that happens, he will have shoulder surgery.

Decker, 29, had nine catches, two for touchdowns, in three games this season. He’s signed through the 2018 season.
