DiPiero says Randy Moss plans to finish his career without an agent

When we received a tip earlier today that Patriots receiver Randy Moss has parted ways with long-time agent Tim DiPiero, we were told that Moss is now looking for a new agent.

DiPiero has confirmed that he no longer represents Moss. But DiPiero says that Moss currently plans to move forward with no agent at all.

“Randy has talked to me for a while about finishing his career without an agent and recently told me that as a veteran entering his entering his 13th season, he no longer believed he needs an agent,” DiPiero said in a press release sent to us via e-mail. “He told me he would be sending me official notice of his decision which he did last week.

“It has been a privilege representing him all these years and to have had a close-up view as we all watched a high school kid, who was this incredible ‘phenom,’ grow into a man and one of the greatest NFL players of all time. What has been most satisfying is to see him give back to our local community, especially to the kids. Randy has a soft spot for kids and when he does things for them, he does it for the right reasons. I will continue to catch him on TV each Sunday and root for him to get a ring before he retires.”

And so Moss at least for now joins former Vikings teammate Daunte Culpepper, who has represented himself for the past several years. We continue to believe it’s not the wisest business decision, since a player sometimes needs a third party to say certain things that need to be said, or to hear certain things that need to be heard. Moss, in our estimation, is entirely too emotional and impulsive to manage the intricacies and subtleties of working directly with his team on matters relating to compensation.

But, nevertheless, it should be an interesting process to watch.
