Doing double duty helps Ryan Quigley to AFC special teamer of the week

When Ryan Quigley showed up to MetLife Stadium for last Sunday’s game against the Jaguars, he expected to handle the punting duties for the Jets.

He wound up having a bigger portfolio. Kicker Nick Folk suffered a quad injury during pregame warmups that left him unable to take care of the placekicking, so the Jets turned the gig over to Quigley while Folk replaced Quigley as the team’s holder.

Quigley wound up making all four of his extra points, including one he caromed in off of an upright, and also landed 5-of-9 punts inside the 20-yard line without any touchbacks during the 28-23 victory. That was a good enough and full enough day to make Quigley the choice for AFC special teams player of the week.

Quigley is in his third season with the Jets and has a net average of 34.8 yards on his 35 punts this season. Folk was placed on injured reserve this week and the Jets signed Randy Bullock to do their kicking, so Quigley will likely be cutting his responsibilities in half against the Bills on Thursday night.
