The Dolphins knew running back Jerome Messam was a long shot to crack their 53-man roster when they signed him away from the Canadian Football League on February 15.
Messam’s road to the NFL just got a little bit tougher.
Messam, 27, indicated on Twitter that he will undergo knee surgery on Tuesday. Messam also revealed that the operation will be his second on the knee over a five-month span.
As Ben Volin of the Palm Beach Post noted, Messam initially injured the meniscus in his left knee during the 2011 CFL season. Prior to the injury, Messam became the first Canadian-born running back to top 1,000 rushing yards since 2000 and earned CFL all-star honors.
Messam still needed a positive first impression with the Dolphins. He’ll now likely miss most or all of the offseason.
