Dolphins rookie wide receiver Caleb Douglas’s work in practice this summer earned him a spot in the starting lineup for the team’s preseason opener and it didn’t take long for the third-round pick to stand out against the Commanders.
On the Dolphins’ first third down on their opening drive, quarterback Malik Willis fired a ball down the right side of the field to Douglas. Commanders cornerback Antonio Hamilton got his hands on the rookie and drew a flag for pass interference, but Douglas was able to extend his left hand, tip the ball in the air and then pull it into his body for a 28-yard gain.
“It was pretty incredible and I look forward to watching it on tape,” head coach Jeff Hafley said, via C. Isaiah Smalls II of the Miami Herald.
It was Douglas’s only catch of the night as the Dolphins went on to score a touchdown on the only drive of the game for the first team, but it was a good sign that the practice highlights translated into a game setting. More of the same once the regular season starts will make Douglas look like a steal in Miami’s first draft with Hafley and General Manager Jon-Eric Sullivan on the job.
