Former NFL quarterback Doug Flutie lost both of his parents Wednesday.

In a statement posted to his Facebook page, Doug Flutie wrote that his father, Dick, died in a hospital of heart issues and that his mother, Joan, had a heart attack an hour later.

“My dad had been ill and died of a heart attack in the hospital and my mom, less than an hour later had a sudden heart attack and passed away,” Doug Flutie wrote. “They say you can die of a broken heart and I believe it.”

The Buffalo Bills released a statement Wednesday evening that said the “organization was deeply saddened today to hear the news of the passing of Doug Flutie’s parents. Doug remains one of the most beloved figures in our franchise’s history and our deepest sympathies and condolences go out to Doug and his entire family during this most difficult time.”

Flutie played 13 NFL seasons and also starred in the Canadian Football League. He went to the Pro Bowl in 1998 with the Bills and also played with the Bears, Chargers and Patriots. Drafted by the Rams in the 11th round in 1985, Flutie capped his career with the Patriots in 2005 and scored the NFL’s last drop kick in his final game.
