Drake Maye unlikely to play preseason opener vs. Colts

Patriots quarterback Drake Maye is unlikely to play in the team’s preseason opener against the Colts on Thursday night, head coach Mike Vrabel said in his Tuesday press conference.

New England is practicing with Indianapolis on Tuesday, which is a significant factor in that decision.

“I wouldn’t anticipate seeing Drake out there on Thursday,” Vrabel said. “But that’s all subject to change. That’s kind of what my mindset is right now sitting here today. Really, it’s just important that we get the work in, get things accomplished that we’re looking to get accomplished. But that can always change, but I wouldn’t anticipate that happening right now.”

Maye, who finished No. 2 in AP MVP voting in 2025, is heading into his third season. He led the league in passer rating (113.5) and completion rate (72 percent), throwing for 4,394 yards with 31 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He also rushed for 450 yards with four TDs.
