Drew Brees and Sean Payton to talk about whether Brees plays

Hall Of Fame Football

The early reports on Drew Brees said he’d miss some time with a shoulder injury, but Saints coach Sean Payton called those “inaccurate” and has given the impression there’s a chance his quarterback could play this week.

Apparently, the two of them are going to sit down and chat about it before they move forward.

According to Ed Werder of ESPN, Brees “still doesn’t know if he can play Sunday,” and “will work with coach Sean Payton to make a final decision.”

Brees said earlier this week he’d have final say over whether he played against the Panthers Sunday, and any degree of hesitance gives the impression he may not feel ready.

Brees was noticeably ineffective after taking a hard shot last week, and he admitted after the game there were a number of throws that were affected by the pain in his throwing shoulder. This week, he said the decision would be made based on how effective he could be rather than whether he risked re-injuring his bruised rotator cuff.

Brees hasn’t missed a game because of injury since joining the Saints, but they may be forced into deciding whether 100 percent of backup Luke McCown is better than whatever percentage of Brees they could put out there this week.
