When Bears General Manager Phil Emery started looking for a new head coach, he talked about the importance of the coach-quarterback relationship.
And as it has been a few times with Bears quarterback Jay Cutler, the answer is, “so far, so good.”
“We’re getting more and more comfortable with each other, trusting each other more and more,” Cutler said of Trestman, via Tom Pelissero of USA Today. “We’re in close quarters right now. See him every day. Talk to him every day. It’s going well. It’s one of those things that’s an evolving process each and every day of just learning about each other and what he likes and what I like and dislike.
“There’s been no real, serious bumps in the road yet.”
Of course, he’s talked about how close he was with coordinators such as Mike Martz and Mike Tice before also, and we see how that turned out.
“I feel there’s a comfortability, but a sense of urgency with both of us,” Trestman said. “You’d have to ask him the rest. But I feel like it’s open and honest. It continues to grow. We’ve only laid a foundation here over the last six months, and what’s ahead will really allow us to grow and test us and I’m excited about that. I think he is as well.”
Of course, there’s a vested interest for both to make the relationship grow. Cutler’s entering a contract year, and the Emery has said they’re not doing extensions for current players this year.
So if Cutler can tap into what Trestman’s selling, he stands to make that much more money next year, from someone.
