Frank Gifford “was right there with Micky Mantle” in New York sports landscape
During halftime of Sunday night’s Hall of Fame Game, NBC’s Al Michaels paid tribute to Hall of Famer Frank Gifford, who died earlier in the day at the age of 84.
Al spent 12 years with Gifford on Monday Night Football, but long before that Gifford was a star player for the New York Giants.
“You had to live in New York in the ‘50s and ‘60s to truly understand what a gigantic figure Frank Gifford was,” Al said. “He was right there with Micky Mantle.”
Even now, more than a half-century after Gifford played his last game in the NFL, he still holds the all-time franchise touchdown record, with 78.
Al’s tribute to Frank Gifford appears below. If you missed it, you should watch it. If you watched it, you should watch it again.
