Frank Reich on Geno Smith: He’s got a lot to prove, but we’re in good shape

The Jets made a couple of moves this offseason that they hope will pay off with an improved offensive showing.

They hired former Colts and Panthers head coach Frank Reich as their offensive coordinator and they traded for quarterback Geno Smith, who was previously with the team for four years after being selected in the second round of the 2013 draft. Smith is coming off a rocky season with the Raiders, but the Jets are betting that hooking him up with Reich will lead to a rebound for both him and the team at large.

Reich thinks things are on the right path at this point. He said he’s been “just so impressed” with Smith’s preparation, communication and football IQ in their short time working together.

“I’ve been around a lot of really smart and good quarterbacks,” Reich said, via the team’s website. “All I’m going to say is we’re in good shape. We’ve got a lot to prove, he’s got a lot to prove, I do, we all do. We understand that, we understand what world we live in. But it’s been good so far.”

The Jets have three first-round picks in 2027 and most people have predicted they will use some or all of them in order to make a move for the long-term quarterback that they’ve been trying to find for ages. There may not be much Smith can do about that plan, but a successful partnership with Reich would be a positive for all involved.
