Herschel Walker: Jerry Jones is a terrible G.M. but the best owner

No player is more synonymous with the building of the 1990s Cowboys dynasty than a player who wasn’t on those teams, Herschel Walker. It was trading Walker to Minnesota that brought Dallas a bounty of draft picks that helped them build the best team in the NFL, and Walker has some interesting thoughts on the way that trade went down.

Specifically, Walker says it was then-coach Jimmy Johnson, and not owner Jerry Jones, who made the smart decision to trade him.

“I think Jimmy Johnson was the reason that trade happened. I don’t think it was Jerry,” Walker said on the Dan Patrick Show. “If I had a team today, I’d have Jimmy Johnson as coach and I’d have Jimmy to be the one to be the general manager of that team.”

So when both Jones and Johnson claim credit for the Walker trade, Walker says the credit should go to Johnson.

But that’s not to say Walker dislikes Jones. In fact, Walker says Jones is great -- as long as he knows his role.

“Jerry is one of the best owners in the league. Jerry’s a terrible general manager, but as an owner, Jerry Jones is probably the best owner in football,” Walker said.

Still, Jones isn’t as bad a G.M. as Mike Lynn.
