Cleveland Browns President Mike Holmgren and coach Eric Mangini are getting a look at quarterback Jake Delhomme at this week’s organized team activities, and so far they like what they’ve seen.
“He’s going to be fine,” Holmgren said while watching OTAs today, per the Cleveland Plain Dealer. “In fact, he’s going to be better than a lot of people expect.”
Frankly, it wouldn’t take much for Delhomme to be better than a lot of people expect after his 18-interception season in 2009. If Delhomme even looks like a competent NFL quarterback, that would exceed the expectations of a lot of people.
But it wouldn’t exceed the expectations of Holmgren -- or of Mangini, who said Delhomme’s demeanor reminds him of Brett Favre.
“He’s got great energy,” Mangini said. “I don’t like making comparisons, but I will. He reminds me a little bit of Favre that way, in terms of he enjoys practice, he enjoys being around the guys. He is able to be serious and still keep things light. It is really important to him.”
Last year, Delhomme’s play reminded people of Favre only to the extent that Favre has been known to throw too many interceptions at times, too. Holmgren and Mangini need to hope Delhomme looks like Favre in more ways than that this season.
