Ickey Woods not impressed with today’s “me-oriented” TD celebrations

Ickey Woods became a star as a Bengals rookie in 1988, scoring 18 touchdowns and following each of them with his famous “Ickey Shuffle” celebration. But he doesn’t want any comparisons to the touchdown celebrations of today.

“The entertainment or the things that they’re doing now is more me-oriented,” Woods told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “They’re geared more for the player than the fans. My thing was geared toward the fans. I never did it on the road. I always did it at home. It was something for our fans to enjoy, something to keep “The Jungle” rocking. Guys now, I think they’re more into me-me with the Sharpie, the cellphone.”

The cellphone Woods referenced was the one used by Joe Horn in a touchdown celebration in 2003, and the Sharpie was used by Terrell Owens in 2002. As a former Bengal, Woods doesn’t seem to be particularly impressed with either of the Bengals’ two brash receivers, Owens and Chad Ochocinco.

And Woods isn’t impressed with many of today’s players and the way they celebrate their touchdowns.

“I wasn’t out to taunt anybody,” Woods said. “I was just out to have fun and let our fans have fun.”
