The Tennessee Titans wanted Jerry Gray to take over as their defensive coordinator, but it appears he’s decided to stay in college.
Chuck Carlton of the Dallas Morning News reports Gray announced at a speaking engagement Thursday night that he was going to stay at the University of Texas. That announcement mirrors what Gray has been telling associates, according to Carlton.
The report cautions that things could change because the Titans are reportedly willing to offer $1 million to Gray, but the veteran coach has shown no indication he will even travel to Nashville to meet with the Titans.
While this is a personal decision for Gray, it’s hard not to think the NFL’s work stoppage plays a part here. It’s not too often that a college defensive backs coach turns down a NFL defensive coordinator job, but that’s the new, strange world we’re living in.
UPDATE: Jason La Canfora of NFL Network says Gray will still go through with an interview Friday with Tennessee. Hmmm.
