Jets playoffs hopes take major hit in loss to Falcons

The New York Jets had been in the thick of the AFC wild-card chase, sporting a 7-6 record that had them tied with the Dolphins and the Ravens for the No. 6 seed.

So with a postseason berth coming into sight, the Jets found a way to lose at home to the Falcons.

Nursing a four-point lead in the fourth quarter after a 37-yard field goal was blocked, the Jets allowed the Falcons to march 73 yard in 11 plays. A six-yard pass from quarterback Matt Ryan to tight end Tony Gonzalez gave the Chiefs the lead.

On the next drive, Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez threw his third interception of the day, which brought up the boos and possibly dropped the curtain on the team’s chances of getting to the playoffs for the first time since 2006.

The Jets aren’t eliminated yet, but they need to win their final two games (including next week at Indy), and they need other contenders to lose.
