The Jets recently turned up their nose at safety Jim Leonhard, and now find themselves in need of some safety depth.

According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, Jets safety Eric Smith will miss the rest of the preseason with a left MCL injury. His source said the team hopes Smith will be recovered in time to play the regular season opener.

Smith was injured last night against the Bengals, hurting his hip and knee. An MRI revealed no serious structural damage, and X-rays were negative.

The Jets third safety (behind projected starters LaRon Landry and Yeremiah Bell), he leaves a hole on defense and special teams.
