John Dorsey: Bowe ready to become one of top receivers in NFL
The relationship between the Chiefs and wide receiver Dwayne Bowe hasn’t always been the smoothest one.
There’s been bad feelings about last year’s franchise tag, reports of trade demands, weight issues and a suspension for violating the performance-enhancing drug policy during his run with the team, all of which led some to wonder about the wisdom of signing Bowe to a long-term deal with a sizable amount of guaranteed money. New Chiefs General Manager John Dorsey is not one of those people.
“I find him to be a very engaging young man,” Dorsey said, via the Kansas City Star. “He’s a receiver and receivers have unique personalities. But he’s a very talented guy. We sat and talked. I told him it’s his responsibility to uphold his end of the bargain. He said he understood the challenge ahead and he totally embraced that challenge. He is ready to take that position of being one of the top receivers in professional football.”
That last line made us think of the old career advice to dress for the job you want instead of the job you have. Bowe’s flashed the talent to rate among the best receivers in football throughout his career, but he hasn’t ever quite reached that level thanks to his own effort and the play of the quarterbacks in Kansas City.
Dorsey’s paying him like the receiver he wants Bowe to be, though, and clearly believes that Alex Smith will take care of half the reasons mentioned above. It will be up to Bowe to do the rest.
