The Giants were seen as a potential landing spot for running back Jeremiyah Love in the first round of this year’s draft, but they never had a chance to consider him while on the clock because Arizona made Love the third overall choice.
It doesn’t sound like that’s an issue for head coach John Harbaugh. Tyrone Tracy had 2,151 yards from scrimmage over his first two seasons and Cam Skattebo returned to practice at the end of the team’s minicamp last month.
Skattebo, who scored seven touchdowns in eight games as a rookie, is coming off a serious ankle injury, but Harbaugh expressed little concern about his ability to pick up where he left off last year.
“I thought he was just what you saw, a downhill runner, a tone-setter type runner,” Harbaugh said, via a transcript from the team. “He’s a tough tackle. That’s what you look for. How many guys can make yards when they’re not supposed to make yards on their own? It seems to me he was that kind of guy at Arizona State and the exact same guy that I saw on tape last year. You guys know better. You watched him up close and personal. He’s a top-tier back, and he’s planning on playing that way this year.”
A strong run game was a consistent part of Baltimore’s offenses during the Harbaugh era. Skattebo should be front and center as the Giants try to establish the same in Harbaugh’s first year on their sideline.
