Josh McCown on QB uncertainty: I don’t like it, but it helps me get better

Washington Redskins v Cleveland Browns

Jason Miller

The Browns still haven’t decided who their starting quarterback will be this season. Josh McCown wishes they would.

McCown said on 850 WKNR in Cleveland that he would prefer to have a road map for how to prepare for the season, but as it stands, he doesn’t know if he’s preparing to be the starter or a backup, or even if he’ll get traded or cut if he doesn’t earn the starting job. McCown also said, however, that he thinks competition makes everyone, himself included, play better.

“I’m a human being and there’s no doubt, you want things mapped out,” McCown said. “I don’t like it, but I think it helps me get better.”

McCown is competing with Robert Griffin III, Cody Kessler Austin Davis and Connor Shaw for the starting job. Coach Hue Jackson hasn’t said who’s in the lead and hasn’t said when he’ll pick a winner.

“My role is every day to come in here and get better and help the room,” McCown said. “However that breaks, if he says ‘Josh McCown is our starting quarterback,’ or if he says Robert Griffin or Cody or Austin or Connor, however that works, I’m going to help the room any way I can. That’s my mindset.”

At this point, that’s the only mindset McCown can have. He doesn’t know what his role on the 2016 Browns will be, so he has to hope that competing for a job will make him better.
