Sunday’s game between the Panthers and Seahawks included a play for which Seattle safety Kam Chancellor wasn’t flagged but for which he was fined. Significantly.
According to Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer, the league fined Chancellor $23,152 for spearing Panthers center Ryan Kalil.
Chancellor was attempting to tackle Carolina running back Fozzy Whitaker, and Chancellor opted to apparently prevent a block from Kalil by dropping his helmet into Kalil’s chest. It worked; Kalil ended up on the ground.
Kalil missed a play before returning to the game.
And while Chancellor will indeed feel the post-tax pinch for his infraction (subject to appeal), he’ll lose a lot less than he did while sitting out the first two games of the regular season.
