Texans defensive end J.J. Watt made it known during and after last Sunday’s victory over the Titans that he thought Tennessee quarterback Zach Mettenberger spent too much time taking selfies before his first NFL start and Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt was asked about Watt’s comments on Monday.
Whisenhunt said that he only recently learned what a selfie is and didn’t object to Watt’s objection to Mettenberger’s decision to chronicle his week and his haircut on social media. Whisenhunt also said that Mettenberger’s dedication to the job has never been in doubt this season, although he added that the team had a hand in getting Mettenberger to trim his hair before Sunday’s start. The coach explained that players can do whatever they want “once you have had success,” but that it was important for Mettenberger to get off on “the right foot.”
“The face of the franchise, that is yet to be determined. That will be determined by his play,’' Whisenhunt said, via the Tennessean. “The one thing we have had discussions about is the understanding if you are the starting quarterback, there will be people … that see you and you have to represent yourself and the organization the right way.”
Whisenhunt found some time to discuss Mettenberger’s play amid all the focus on follicles and photographs, saying the rookie was too amped up early in the game before settling in and playing better as the day went on. They’ll have a couple of days to work with him this week and then a full week after they return for the bye to get Mettenberger ready for the Ravens, where the spotlight will likely spend more time on his on-field work rather than his off-field fun.
